Built 1853. The Bastion (an English word meaning 'stronghold') was originally 36 ft high (The Bastion has been moved twice and the new foundation makes it a little higher) and has three floors. The first two measure 19 ft across with the third floor measuring 24.5 ft across. The first floor was used for the clerk of the Hudson Bay Company (HBC) while the second and third floors held small cannon for the defense of the community.
HBC interest in Canada was based mostly on the fur trade. The forts that they built across Canada were all geared for that type of commerce. The remaining Bastion in Nanaimo was built for the companies one and only foray into coal mining.
The Bastion is open for tours in the Summer.
