This roadside milestone has been in existence long before the advent of the automobile. It gives the distances in miles to Ulverston and Lancaster, across the sands, which would save a considerable amount of time in comparison by taking the road. It would be about 30 miles by road to Lancaster and 14 to Ulverston.
The sign also points the way to Grange and Cark but no distances are shown.
The sign is well maintained and regularly painted.
