The oldest open cemetery managed by South Lakeland District Council. It opened in 1843 and is now full except for occasional interments into existing graves. A quiet place with a real sense of time.

At the corner of Castle Road and Sedbergh Road is a large, curved wall with yews growing on the top. Following the wall west brings you to a pair of large black gates and a stone built gate house (now private). Pushing the large gate open allows access into an old, quiet and slightly run-down cemetery.

In this generally forgotten corner of Kendal is a Victorian cemetery which opened on 17th. May 1843. Near the centre is a disused chapel, which is thought to have been designed by Kendal architect, George Webster, opened on 12th July 1845. Well kept yews make up for the slight air of abandonment of the chapel. There are around 250 graves and many have several people sharing the site.

There is a range of monuments and headstones, some of the earliest have quite fancy carved script. At the back of the cemetery you will find a large plot with several markers, one quite large, plus in the middle a large pine tree growing up. This is the Wakefield plot, inc. Sir William Wavell Wakefield, 1st Baron Wakefield of Kendal. He was a rugby union player and a politician.

Castle Street Cemetery is an interesting place to explore and worth a visit. There is on-road parking in the surrounding streets, although it's often full during the day. It's just a few minutes walk from Stramongate Bridge in the middle of town.
