In 1436 work had already commenced on construction of the church when the the townsmen petitioned Bishop Lacy for the right to bury their dead in Callington rather than having to carry them to St. Sampson's church at Southill, a journey of about 3 miles. The new church was dedicated to St. Mary and the churchyard consecrated. Many, many generations of Callington townsfolk have been buried in this churchyard. The churchyard was replaced by a cemetery in Liskeard road, Callington .
