The village and parish name comes from "sen(e)lai" and was recorded in the Domesday Book. The earthworks of a substantial fort can be found in Shenley Church End and the Church of St Mary dates back to the 12th Century. The village is reputed to have growing in it a hawthorn bush which, like the one at Glastonbury Abbey, only blooms at Christmastime. this church is grade II listed.

This area is a delightful mix of the old and the new. Traditional villages intermix with tastefully designed modern housing. There is a suitable mix of housing to suit every budget. Many of the buildings are Grade II listed including Westbury Farm.
