The bridge was opened in 1908 and replaced the ferry which was the only way to cross Walney Channel previous to this.The Bridge is of the Draw type,and opened to allow tall ships to pass through,today it opens occasionally,to allow tall ships and yachts to sail under and also for testing purposes.

The bridge was originally a toll bridge,but in 1935 the name was changed from Walney Bridge to Jubilee Bridge to celebrate the silver jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary,at the same time it was declared toll free.
The bridge spans Walney Island Channel,and connects Walney Island with Barrow in Furness.
