Swnside/Sunkenkirk stone circle is Neolithic Bronze age of about 3300BC
The circle is regarded by many to be the finest most complete circle not only in Britain but in Western Europe, and unlike Castle Rigg and Long Meg stone circles is only lacking in visitor numbers due to it's splendid isolation,it is one mile from the nearest parking point to reach it,which is an easy enough walk along a bridleway,or can be reached by bike or on horse.
The circle is 93 feet in Diameter, the tallest of the 55 stones being 7 foot 6 inches, and stands exactly at North.
Excavations carried out at the begining of the last centuary showed the stones to be bedded on compacted pebbles, the standing stones themselves are Porphyritic slate from the adjacent fells, the tallest and heaviest weighing 5 tons.
