The lower part of the 27-mile system of spring- and stream-fed collection ponds, tunnels, aqueducts, ditch-crossing flumes, reservoirs and open ditches gathers natural runoff in the 'Kohala mountain rainforest behind Waipio Valley and sends a river first to Kukuihaele, then Honoka‘a and then onward to all the communities along the way to its final destination in the growing community of Pa‘auilo.
Every day the ditch pushes more than 30 million gallons per day to some 20,000 residents in Waimea and along the Hamakua coast.
“That’s a lot of water,”
A lot of water, indeed. And more than 10 million gallons of it seeps out of the ditch every day.</font"> Ten million gallons would just about fill the first 10 floors of the Hilton Hawaiian Village’s 31-story Rainbow Tower. That’s a lot of overflowing bathtubs. And all from a 96-year-old concrete-lined ditch in desperate need of repairs and upgrades to keep the water flowing.
