The wood's name derives from an Anglo Saxon Village and the Parish of Great Linford. The woods located here cover approximately 100 acres. It is a remnant of the ancient forest that covered the country more than 5000 years ago. The wood is designated for conservation, wildlife, forestry and recreation.
Although it is only half a mile from Milton Keynes City Centre, with over 30,000 people living within one mile of it, Linford Wood is a real woodland, rich in wildlife - an island of semi-natural habitat in a sea of modern development.
The wooden carving makes use of an old tree stump. Rupert bear is carved into one side and is brightly painted. A badger is also painted on the other side and its head protrudes from underneath the stump. There is also a stoat on the top of the stump with beady eyes. It is signed with a carved name of 'Jack'.
