In Johnston's series of "Little Colonel" novels many of the characters, homes, businesses, churches, people and pets were residents of Pewee Valley, known in her novels as Lloydsborough Valley. The first book, "The Little Colonel" was published in 1895. Johnston intended to complete the series several times but her fans compelled her to continue telling stories of old Kentucky's aristocracy. The last book in the series was published just months before she died. In 1935, Twentieth Century Fox released "The Little Colonel" film, starring Shirley Temple and Lionel Barrymore.
Johnston was a member of the Pewee Valley Presbyterian Church on 119 Central Avenue and even taught Sunday school there. Her pew is marked with a plaque.
Pewee Valley is a small suburban village near Louisville, Kentucky. A local theater group has a theater on Mt. Mercy Drive and is in their 51st year of doing plays. The playhouse is named after Johnston's novels.
