The main inscription is: “Lest We Forget.”
This memorial was erected in 1905 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1905. There has been some controversy in the recent past to have the government remove it. However, this small plot of ground is private property belong to the United Daughters of the Confederacy and could not be removed. It shall be noted that the last flag of the Confederacy was lowered here May 26, 1865.
The sculptured bust on each corner are of General Robert E. Lee, General “Stonewall” Jackson, General P.G.T Beaureguard and last is Henry W. Allen who was first a General in the Confederate Army but, second and last was elected as Governor of Confederate Louisiana and served until the end.
This Courthouse served as the capital of Louisiana the later part of the war and Governors from
two other states served here. The courthouse that served for this period was the first court house building specifically for a court house for Caddo Parish that coincidently just got finished early in 1861. Previously the Courthouses had been in several other buildings not for a court house.
