Pedro Augusto Carneiro Lessa was born in 1859 and died in 1921. In 1876 he got his law degree from the Law University in Sao Paulo. In 1885, Less started in public career when he became the Secretário da Relação de São Paulo. In 1891 he went to the Sao Paulo state assembly. Lessa was appointed to the Federal Supreme Court in 1907. During his tenure he was responsible for applying the rule of habeus corpus to the constitution on 1891. In 1910 he sat at the 11th seat of the Academia Brasileira de Letras, an academy formed by Brazilian authors.
