The building is named after Brazilian politician and author Darcy Ribeiro. The center houses about 4,000 piece of art from Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay, Guatemala and other countries on the region. Pieces include musical instruments and toys (to name a few)

He studied for a long time many different Brazilian aboriginal groups, and wrote important works about Brazilian cultures and racial groups. His most famous work is called O Povo Brasileiro, which is a synthesis about the formation of the Brazilian society.
