The Royal Jubilee Hospital opened its doors in 1890 and has been Victoria's major hospital up until 1983 when the new Victoria General opened in View Royal. The Royal Jubilee is home to Victoria's first operating room (no longer in use but a Canadian National Heritage site) which was built from a generous bequest from the Pemberton family. (Joseph Pemberton was the Surveyor-General for the Crown Colony of Vancouver Island) This hospital has 400 beds and numerous health services for the citizens of Victoria and Vancouver Island. It is home to a major Cancer treatment facility and it is one of the hospitals used by the University of BC for their Medical Degree programs. In 2007, the provincial government announced a program to build a new Royal Jubilee that will have 500 beds and replace some of the older buildings now in use at the hospital. Projected date for opening the new hospital is 2010.
