The Steelman was sculpted by Louise Lentz Woodruff for the 1933-34 Century of Progress exhibition. It is positioned with its hands behind a male and female, symbolizing technology advancing man. It is surrounded by the original relief panels representing the basic sciences: astronomy, mathematics, physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, medicine, and geology.

Today, the original sculpture is housed within the walls of the school after Woodruff (a Joliet Township High School alumna) donated it to the school in 1935. Because of the statue and the fact that the steel industry played a large role in Joliet's development, the school renamed its sports teams The Steelmen.

The waymarked sculpture on public display outside the school was dedicated in 2000.
School name: Joliet Township High School - Joliet Central Campus

Artist: Marsha Lega (waymarked sculpture); Louise Lentz Woodruff (original sculpture)

Year Created/Dedicated: 2000 (waymarked); 1933 (original)
