This is at the site of Thomas Edison's ironworks. There are numerous mines in the area. Most are open pit. This is one of the few underground shafts that can be entered. The 100 foot long shaft is narrow enough to require crawling most if its length.

In the 1890's, Thomas Edison established an iron mining and processing complex on over 2,000 acres of land on Sparta Mountain. At its peak it employed over 500 people.

Edison invented a unique process to separate the iron from the low grade ore found at this site.

Unfortunately for Edison, shortly after he opened this complex, extensive, high quality iron ore deposits were discovered in Minnesota making Edison's operation unprofitable. He lost over 2 million dollars (quite a sum in the day) before closing the operation in 1900.
