I visited the top of Mauna Kea as part of an interview with the staff at the Gemini Telescope in November 2004. It's amazing to think that this pick is TWICE the height of the tallest mountain in Australia.

You are advised to use a 4WD to travel along the dirt road. Stop half way for an hour, as altitude sickness DOES occur - in varying degrees according to the individual. The stop half way (at the 9000 ft mark) has a public observatory of sorts.

Even in summer, you should be prepared for any weather - snow is common in winter. It was six degrees centigrade (about 40 F) when I was there in late fall.
Altitude in Feet: 13815
