The Town of Tonawanda wastewater treatment facility was the first in New York State to implement a coarse monomedia filtration system. It replaced 16 traditional mixed-media sand filters that filtered 32 million gallons/day. The system was put into place in 1993 in order to relieve the burden caused by increased flow during wet weather, which sometimes required partial filter bypasses that reduced the quality of filtration. The new system has reduced the amount of the backwash water volume that is recycled to the head of the plant for re-treatment by 80% and now uses only 12 filter cells.
