The Civil Rights Memorial is located in front of the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama and was dedicated in 1989. It is not far from the Dexter Street Baptist Church where Martin Luther King served as pastor.
The memorial honors 40 people who died in the struggle for racial equality between 1954 and 1968. The dates were chosen since 1954 marks the year that the United States Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in schools was unlawful. 1968 was the year that Martin Luther King was assassinated.
The memorial was designed by Maya Lin who is well-known for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The concept of the fountain came from and quotes a portion of King’s I Have a Dream speech which he gave in front of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963: "...we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream."
Unfortunately, with the memorial’s location, there are security guards who keep an eye on the area, but you are free to photograph the memorial and read the names listed.
Please provide a photograph of the memorial with your log. A GPS is not necessary.
