The Carmel of the Holy Spirit in Littleton, Colorado was founded on Novemver 1, 1947 by Mother Teresa of Jesus who came at the invitation of Archbishop Vehr from Grand Rapids, Michigan. The monastery has an exceptionally beautiful location near the foot of the Rocky Mountains. God blessed the foundation with an abundance of material and spiritual blessings. Today it is a complete monastery.
The Primitive Rule is lived in its fullness according to the "Constitutions" written by Saint Teresa with the few external adaptations demanded by contemporary circumstances. The daily schedule includes Holy Mass, the complete Divine Office recited in choir, two one-hour periods of mental prayer in common, an hour of recreation in common after dinner and after supper, spiritual reading and manual labor. Prayer pervades the day as each Sister lives in silence and solitude "meditating day and night on the law of the Lord and watching in prayer" according to the Rule. It is a life of deep interior happiness, the fruit of union with God. The community life is lived with abounding joy. Recreations ring with the sweetest laughter on earth. Sisterly love lightens the austerity of the penitential life. Obedience provides the freedom from self that is the key to happiness and gives unerring knowledge of God's Will in every circumstance.
The Carmelite life is apostolic in the higest sense of the word. Transformation into Jesus is its goal. A life is fruitful for the glory of God and the salvation of souls in direct proportion to the degree of this transformation. The apostolate of prayer and penance is global in its scope.
