To the south the castle town of Nagoya was built, a hastily built conglomeration of families of warriors and serfs from nearby Kiyosu, along with merchants, 3 shrines, 110 temples and a handful of 67 tiny towns. In October 1889 Nagoya finally became a city in its own right.

The original gold dolphins that once decorated the castle were incinerated in a 1945 air raid. The replicas replacing them were remounted in 1959. They remain the symbols of the city even today.

In 1930 the Tokugawa family gave the castle to the city of Nagoya. It was opened to the public in 1931. However, a U.S.A. air raid in 1945 left the donjon and other parts of the bastion in ashes. Fifteen years later the walls surrounding the castle were completed (a very faithful replica) with an assist from 653 tons of steel beams. The rebuilt castle has become a symbol of a city "up from the ashes" after World War II.

The Southwest, Southeast and Northwest Towers survived the air-raid and are considered Important Cultural Assets.

The seven story donjon stands 48 meters high and offers a panoramic view of the city from its observation floor on top. Original stone base.
