The air disaster had a major impact on Australia, with funerals held in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. Despite being at war at the time, the crash stunned our nation.

At the time, the national memorial service held in Melbourne was regarded as one of the most emotional funerals in the nations history. The members of the Menzies Cabinet killed included, Hon Geoffrey Austin Street MHR, Minister for the Army and Repatriation, Hon James Fairbairn MHR, Minister for Air and Civil Aviation and the Hon Sir Henry Gullet MHR, Vice-President of the Executive Council.
