The 1950 flood was devastating to the City of Winnipeg. The 1997 flood which was many feet higher had relatively little impact on the city due to the foresight of Premier Duff Roblin who created the Winnipeg Floodway.
RIVER GAUGE INFORMATION:
PLAQUE ON THE LOWER TAN TILES These tan tiles represent the high-water mark of the 1950 flood. The upper row of tan tiles represents the high-water mark of the 1826 flood - the greatest flood in Manitoba's recorded history. PLAQUE JUST BELOW THE UPPER TAN TILES This middle row of tiles represents the height of floodwaters reached during the 1852 flood. Without Manitoba Flood Control System, the rivers would have reached this height again in 1997.
