This chapel was built at the end of the 19th century as a private chapel for the Russian Tzar and his wife, since the last Russian Tzar Nicolaus II did not want to be without his own church for himself and the royal court when visiting the region.

The chapel was designed by Louis N. Benois, the same architect who designed the church in Bad Homburg and grandfather of Peter Ustinov, the legendary actor.
The church is located on the Mathildehöhe (Mathilde Heights), in the middle of the Jungenstil (Art Nouveau) artist colonie which was founded by the Great Duke Ernst Ludwig a year or so after the chapel was built.
