There are 4 sirens/speakers that are manufactured by the Whelen Engineering Company. They are stand alone using batteries and radio for power and control. The batteries are kept charged by solar panels and the system is tested every Wednesday at 1:30 PM
The City of Port Alberni is one of the most tsunami susceptible developed areas in Canada. The city is located at the head of a very narrow 60 km long inlet open to Barclay Sound on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. The geography of the inlet can result in amplification of tsunami’s height to approximately three times the wave height experienced in Barclay Sound.
Port Alberni has already experienced a tsunami as a result of the large Alaskan earthquake of 1964.
375 homes where damaged along with another 55 being washed away. Today the damage would be far worse because of the development that has taken place since then.
Type of system: Photovoltaic (electrical)
