This hotel was built on the site of the ancient monastery; the Benedictine Abbey was dedicated in 1318 and was demolished by 1700.
Bedford Hotel was built in the 1720’s, it was for many years the residence of the Duke of Bedford’s agent. It’s conversion to a hotel took place in 1822.
It is said that one of the ancestors of the Dukes of Bedford haunts the corridors at night and a young girl has also been 'seen' in the hotel restaurant.
