This museum is worth visiting for the historic structure itself. The Casamata was a bunker house, part of the fortifications of ditches and embankments surrounding Matamoros in the 19th century. You can walk up on the steep stairs to the roof of the building and look out through slits made for rifles at the rest of Matamoros, and even Brownsville across the river.

Inside are modern exhibits on the history of Matamoros and Tamaulipas, including the War of American Aggression (sounds like the Southerner’s name for the Civil War - the War of Northern Aggression. Why is the winner always the aggressor?). Three rooms explain the general history of Matamoros and Tamaulipas - one governed mainly by a boom-and-bust cycle created across the river. The two rooms in the Casamata itself are devoted to the military history of Matamoros, from the initial Mexican revolution to the Mexican War, and every internal revolution since.
