This is a special Russian orthodox cathedral with an associated chapel in a specially preserved heritage village located on a bend in the Kamenka River, 3 hours drive east of Moscow. The Cathedral of the Nativity was built in the 12th century, and miraculously surved the siege of of Batu Khan . The base of the building is made of whitewashed brick and stone, topped by one large star-studded dome and three small domes, all decorated with gold on a field of blue. The interior is paved with majolica slabs , and golden gates decorated with lion masks guard portals of the sanctuary.
In contrast to the elegance and magnificance of the cathedral, located on the grounds immeidately behind it is a small chapel, the Church of St Nicholas. It provides a humble contrast to the stone cathedral, as it has all the traditional architectural elements of orthodox churches in the Suzdal area, but is constructed entirely out of wood, including the dome.
The waypoint for this site is located midway between the two churches in the Suzdal Kremlin square. Be sure to take one photo for each church when standing at this waypoint!
