The Farnesebrug is a bascule bridge with a length of 48 meters and operational since 1979. It is used by cars and trains.
A bascule bridge is a drawbridge with a counterweight that continuously balances the span, or "leaf," throughout the entire upward swing in providing clearance for boat traffic. Bascule is a French term for seesaw and balance, and bascule bridges operate along the same principle. They are the most common type of movable bridge in existence because they open quickly and require relatively little energy to operate.
The ‘Kallosluis’ is a waterway lock at the left riverside of the Scheldt. The lock was constructed in 1979, has a length of 360 meters, is 48 meters breadth and 12,5 meters deep. It gives passage for sea ships to the docks of the ‘Waaslandhaven’. This part of the port of Antwerp is situated left of the river Scheldt in East-Flanders. Over the ‘Kallosluis’ are two bascule bridges, the ‘Farnesebrug’ and the ‘Melselebrug’
