Over 200 years ago, Fort Gibraltar was built here by the Hudson's Bay Company. It was renamed Fort Garry 18 years later.

The first fort on this site was Fort Gibraltar built in 1806 by the Hudson's Bay Company. That Fort was destroyed in 1816. In 1822, the second Fort Gibraltar was renamed Fort Garry after the amalgamation of the Hudson's Bay and North West Companies. Fort Garry was rebuilt in 1835 with stone walls running 280 feet East and West and 240 Feet North and South. At that time is was renamed Upper Fort Garry to distinguish it from Lower Fort Garry which was built 18 miles North downstream on the Red River. In 1850, the walls were extended northward and this gateway was erected. This fort was seized by Louis Riel during the RED RIVER REBELLION (
visit link) of 1870. The Fort was sold in 1882 and walls were demolished except for this gateway. In 1897 this gateway and park were presented by the Hudson's Bay Company to the City of Winnipeg.
