Seaman was purchased for $20 by Meriwether Lewis while he was in Philadelphia preparing for the Expedition. It is not known why Lewis selected a Newfoundland breed. Lewis makes several references to his dog in his journals while on the Expedition. It is not known what happened to Seaman after the Expedition though it is thought he was with Lewis on his trip enroute to Washington, D.C. and when Captain Meriwether Lewis died in Natchez Trace.
The sculpture is made of cor-ten steel and weighs 1,400 pounds and was created by Tom Neary.
