The sign states that Lake Sakakawea is the larges man-made lake in the United States. However other sources indicate Lake Mead and Lake Powell. These lake all vary in size depending on the flow through the dams.

Lake Sakakawea stretches 178 miles from Garrison Dam to Williston, North Dakota. Garrison dam measuring 2.5 miles long and .5 miles wide at the base is the fifth largest earthen dam in the world.
