Potsdam's Old City Hall was built in 1755 and this Atlas statue has crowned the top of the building for the last 252 years. The original statue was made of gold-plated lead but turned out to be too heavy and fell down after only two years. Since 1877, the statue consists of gold-plated copper.

For unknown reasons, the Atlas statue was almost immediately nicknamed "The Doll" and consequently, the city jail, which was located in the building until 1885, was nicknamed the "Doll-House."

Today, the building hosts a museum and a community center and the Atlas statue, which can be seen from miles away is so popular that most citizen don't even know the real name of the building but simply call it "The Atlas."
