Recently restored IOOF Hall that was nearly lost in a fire. While the building is quite large, it is very much in keeping with buildings of the group and the area for the time.

I have had this one in my sights for some time. Covington is the city just across the river from Cincinnati, and was and is still is a very thriving small city. This three story structure was built in 1856. George Roebling, the builder of the Brooklyn Bridge, may have had a hand in the design of the building. He was in town at the time to build another notable bridge (yes, it has been Waymarked). During the Civil War, Confederate prisoners were held inside the building. General Grant was honored here after the war. A former governor of KY, who was assassinated, laid in state here. The building also once housed a skating rink in the 1950s. In May of 2002, the building was severely damaged in a large fire. It was almost completely written off due to the extent of the damage. Instead, it was restored to its former glory. I understand the main ballroom has also been restored. Office and retail space now occupy the space within.

The tile man was nice enuf to let me inside to see some of the details and fill me in on some details.
