At the place where the stairs from Jackson Square meet the Riverwalk is a dazzling view of New Orleans along the Mississippi River, with the Natchez steamboat in front, and the Crescent City Bridge behind.

The Riverwalk is a great place to walk, day or night. I happened to walk it in late twighlight, when the sky still had a bit of brightness left. As I was walking by, the Jax Brewery building lit up. I could feel a light breeze as I gazed upon the river. There are musicians along the way, too. There is so much other activity that goes on. You can see all sorts of ships/boats on the river, including a ferry. There is also a railroad (and trolley line) that parallels the Riverwalk. Toward the downtown section where the lights are is the Riverwalk Mall, where there are the usual fare of shops and restaurants. However, near this location is the French Quarter, including the Cafe du Monde. So, you have to visit it in person to get the full five-sensory experience!
The walkway is flat, but you may have to ascend a flight of stairs to get to it. Also, watch for trains when crossing the tracks. Of course, you could also arrive by boat!
