This typical Mexican town square, fronted by Matamoros’ City Hall and Cathedral, is the center of the city. There’s a statue of Padre Miguel Hidalgo and a gazebo with a gorgeously painted ceiling.

Since 1800, this plaza has undergone transformations with each hurricane hitting Matamoros. The original name of the plaza was Plaza de la Constituction. It was changed to Plaza Hidalgo in 1831.
