The First Iron furnace in Wisconsin was built in Mayville. It operated from 1848 to 1928 and closed when the demand for pig iron declined. It started production at the rate of 12 ton per day and grew until it was producing 800 ton per day.

Today there is nothing left except a historic marker and a pile of dirt covered rubble nearby.
