I searched topo maps and other media to see if I could find an official name for this quirk of nature and could find nothing. So, I decided to name it myself; at least for waymarking purposes.
This unique wonder of nature is located in the Gooding City of Rocks north of Gooding, ID. This is just one of many very unique formations in this area. There are many hoodoos throughout the area, with some of the most spectacular hoodoos located in the Coyote Springs drainage just to the north of Grey Wolf's Balanced Rock.
There is a dead-end track road running the length of the ridge and the balanced rock is just south of this track road. This is an excellent area to spend an entire day with your camera and do some hiking. Deer, antelope, coyotes, and other critters, as well as rattlesnakes in the summer, can be found in the area.
If you've never visited this area it is several miles west of Hwy 46, with a sign pointing the way just north of a flattop butte. I've seen a number of sedans parked at the entrance to the Gooding City of Rocks, so most vehicles should be able to make the trip without difficulty in dry weather.
