The Newton Cemetery in the Midewin National Tallgrass Priarie is the site of a single grave for Mr. Howard Newton, who died in 1865. Several stories exist concerning the fate of Mr. Newton, who may have lived on a nearby farmstead and is thought to have been a Civil War veteran.

Somewhere during the 50-year tenure of the US Army as an arsenal, a steel plate was painted white with black lettering was installed to better mark Mr. Newton's final resting place.
