The final resting place of America’s 35th President, John F. Kennedy, is marked by Cape Cod granite surrounding an eternal flame.

Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy chose this spot, on a steep slope directly beneath the Lee Mansion and overlooking Washington, D.C., as the site for her husband’s burial. Although the President could have been buried at the Kennedy family plot in Massachusetts, Mrs. Kennedy believed that he belonged ‘to the people,’ and that his grave site should be accessible to the people. The president was laid to rest here on November 25, 1963. A month later, the graves of his two deceased children were relocated to this grave site.
By 1967, the grave site had to be remodeled to accommodate the thousands of mourners. The muddy grass walkways were replaced by pavement and memorial stones etched with Kennedy quotes were installed. Coupled with the eternal flame, this makes quite a moving memorial to Kennedy. Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis was buried beside her first husband on October 6, 1994.
