"The south side, chiefly residential, is expanding southward to and beyond the New Capital, that lifts its dome high above the roofs and spires of the town." - The WPA Guide To Kentucky, 1996
The area surrounding the capital is still residential. The capital and Governor's mansion sit among everyday homes along with the only home in Kentucky designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The capital still lifts its dome high above the roofs and spires of the town. Situated below cliffs and ledges leading to the Kentucky River it is difficult to get a good view of the capital from the ground unless you are right there. Back when the capital was built it was easily accessisible to the public. Since 9/11 the only way you can view the inside of the capital is to go on a scheduled, guided tour.
