Its main objectivo, together with the too much blockhouses raised in this agitate period, was to guarantee the defense of the bar of the Tejo and to control the fluivial and maritime access to the city of Lisbon. It is the one of the most significant military constructions of this period, that if keeps in good condition of conservation, being today Headquarters of Honor of the Portuguese Association of the Friends of the Castles.
