ÆppelTreow Winery is one of the few non-grape wineries that I like. Most places that use fruits other than grapes seem to make only the super-sweet wines, which is not what I want in a wine. I like something a little drier, and ÆppelTreow provides it.
Most of the apples and pears for the winery come from their sister operation
Brightonwoods Orchard. The other fruits, such as cherries, are obtained from other local (usually Wisconsin) orchards.
The first five tastings are free, but if you want to taste the entire product line, it is a $5.00 charge.
We ended up with a 375ml bottle of the Cyser Rose. It is a dry wine. Not as dry as you would find in a dry red wine, but not quite like a dry white. The tasting sheet suggests it similar to mead, but since I have never had a true mead, I'll take their word for it. In the end, we felt it would be a good thing to have for the family Christmas snack buffet that is filled with cheese and crackers.
Now, remember I said I did not care for super-sweet fruit wines. Well, I take that back. Their Cerise Cherry Port was just wonderful. My mother ended up with a 375ml bottle of it. Now, I just hope it gets opened when she hosts Thanksgiving this year...
I would be remiss if I did not mention their hard ciders, since that is what started them towards their wine making activities. They have four standard flavors (regular, cranberry, strawberry, and spiced) and the occasional speciality hard cider.
New for 2011, ÆppelTreow has a line of distilled spirits as well.
