Mount Angel Abbey
Ph.503-845-3030
We go to the Oktoberfest (held in September less chance of rain) in Mt. Angel, OR every couple of years and this also includes a trip up to the Abbey.
In 1881, a Benedictince monk, the Rev. Adelhelm Odermatt, came to Oregon and soon established a Benedictine community, which is now known as Saint Benedictine Abbey. This community was first started at Grevais, but in 1884 it was moved to the town of Mt. Angel. Since it was less than a mile from Mount Angel post office, the authorities would not establish a new post office for abbey. The first postmaster was Wendel Neiderprum. Father Odermatt came from Engelberg, Switerland. He translated this name into Mount Angel, thus naming the town and the butte, although the town was incorporated with the form Mt. Angel. Saint Benedict was named for the founder of the Benedictine Order, who was born in Nursia, Italy, in the yeat 480 and died at Monte Cassino, Italy, in 543. The Butte on which St. Benedicts Abbey is built has an elevation of 485 feet.
