West Virginia State Capitol Building - Capitol Buildings on Waymarking.com

West Virginia is younger by far than most of the Eastern states, being made a state separate from Virginia during the civil war. West Virginia's original state capital jumped from Wheeling to Charleston a few times before settling in Charleston in 1885. This building was completed in 1932 to replace the former building a few miles away which had burned down. The current capitol has a gold (some decades plated some painted) dome and a large chandelier inside, as well as many statues (inside and out) for memorial, honor a historic figure, and for art, and pictures & paintings on the inside of former governors. (<--That's what I saw, here's what I've read that I thought was neat -->) It took more than 700 train carloads of Indiana limestone and 4,640 tons of steel to construct the building. The dome is 5' higher than the National Capitol, which it is, in part at least, styled after. There is a tour of it...but I grew up in the capital of another state (and tired of them 10 million capitol tour field trips ago) and prefer to wander the building on my own...though I'm sure it's interesting & informative. When entering, I thought this was the "main" entrance, but upon exiting...it was hard to tell. Either way its a major entrance, and you should have no trouble finding your goal.
