The Sunshine Mine is over a mile deep and has 100 miles of tunnels. The mine, the nations largest silver mine, was the site of the nation's worst hardrock mining disaster since 1917, when on May 2, 1972 fire broke out in the mine. Smoke and carbon monoxide spread quickly through the tunnels. Of the 174 miners who were working under ground at the time, 91 perished.
