this is a piece of WWII german artillery. The plaque that is mounted in front of this monument says the following:
At the end of WWII the town of Susteren payed a heavey toll for its freedom.
From September 1944 until Januari 1945 this area was the front line of the war.
On september 7th 1944 the people from Susteren were forced by the germans to evacuate to the town of Posterhold.
After some heavy fighting, the town of Susteren was liberated by the British on January 17th 1945.
This German canon remembers us of this wartime. The canon is restored by the city of Susteren with the cooperation of Siwido, the Kiwanis Club Susteren "suestra" and buildingcontracter Hans Wagter in 2000.
