The Gallo-Roman museum was inaugurated in 1975. Bernard H. Zehrfuss, architect, Grand Prix de Rome, designed the building soe that it is perfectly integrated into the archeological site and almost invisible from the outside. The contrete structures, powerful and discrete, give the interior architecture and aspect resolutely modern. In the course of exploring the museum, evoking a long descent to the heart of heritage, the visitor discoveres one of the richest archeological collections in France. It retraces the history of Lyon from the end of the Prehistoric age to the 7th century A.D.
The museum collections include all of the chapters of public and private life of a capital of the Roman Empire. Especially noteworthy is the Claudien Tablet, discovered at the beginning of the 16th century : magnificently engraved in bronze, which records the speech that the Emperor Claudius, born in Lyon, gave in 48 A.D. in Rome in favor of the Gauls.
The dedication of the amphitheater of the three Gauls, the marble garlands of the altar of the three Gauls, and the honorary inscriptions offered to the high priests testify to the monumental and prestigeous collection.
