The Watermelon Thump is held the last full weekend in June every year. This festival is over 50 years old. In 2008 it will be held June 26-29. Four days of music, food and fun. The Watermelon Growers Association hold a biggest melon contest, with the melons on display until the Champion Melon Auction. The "Thump" is the festival where the World Championship watermelon seed spitting contest for the Guiness Book of World Records occurs. Everyone is welcome to enter. there is a kid's spitting contest on Friday. Adults on Saturday and Team's spit on Sunday. Bonus prize money to anyone who beats the existing Championship Watermelon Seed Spit record of 68 feet, 9 1/8 inches! Last year my geocaching girlfriends and I spit for the first time. It was hilarious and a blast.
There is a carnival, shopping, crafts, live music every day, a parade on Saturday. And the town is really friendly.
Thursday is free grounds and entertainment admission. Friday is 2$ for grounds admission and free entertainment (admission to the headliner entertainment in the pavilion costs extra. Saturday grounds admission is 3$ (admission to the headliner entertainment in the pavilion costs extra). Sunday is free grounds and entertainment admission.
Luling is also the home of City Market BBQ. Rated as one of the top 3 Barbeques in all of Texas and in the top 5 in the United States. Come for the great music, watermelon eating, seed spitting and have the best BBQ in Texas.
Check out the music line up at www.watermelonthump.com. They've had such entertainers as Pat Green, Roger Creager, Lembo Allen, and others in the past. Every year they have great headliners on Friday and Saturday night.
