Montreal Massacre, also known for its location, the École Polytechnique Massacre, took place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. A twenty-five year-old gunman entered classrooms, hallways and the cafeteria, separated the male and female students claiming he was "fighting feminism" and shot twenty-eight people, killing fourteen women before killing himself.
This monument was sculpted by U.W.O. art student Leigh Rainey. It uses two polished black granite; one with faces of women etched into it, the other with the text below. The two stones are positioned to reflect between each other, creating an image of ghostly faces behind the text.
The marker text:
The London Women's Monument was dedicated on December 6, 1994, the 5th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre. It is a place to remember and reflect on violence. Particularly violence against women. And all women and men who work to end it.
